Ghana frees GH¢4 billion (about $340 million) for healthcare — and coverage climbs toward 70%
Ghana has removed the cap on its national health insurance levy, and Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says the change has freed about GH¢4 billion (about $340 million) for the health sector. Allocations to the National Health Insurance Scheme have risen from about GH¢6.65 billion (about $570 million) in 2024 to about GH¢10 billion (about $860 million) in 2025, coverage has climbed from about 57% to about 70% of the population, and free primary care is now offered in 135 districts at roughly 4,500 facilities. The point of insurance is that illness should not mean financial ruin; on these numbers, that promise now reaches millions more Ghanaians.
