Ghana's Bui Power Authority has built 200MW of solar since 2020 — including panels floating on its own reservoir
The Bui Power Authority was created to run a hydroelectric dam on Ghana's Black Volta river. Since its mandate was widened beyond hydropower, it has developed about 200 megawatts-peak of solar capacity, Corporate Communications Manager Mawuli Fui Kwadzovia told Citi's Breakfast Show — including a 1MWp floating solar array on the Bui reservoir in 2021, since expanded to 5MWp, a string of 50MWp ground-mounted additions, and a new 50MWp plant at Galgu in the Yendi Municipality, its first solar project outside its home region. It is a tidy model: the same water that spins the turbines now hosts panels that catch the sun while the reservoir sits full.
