Ghana's children get a champion — and the world just noticed

Dr. Emmanuella Amoako, Ghana's lead pediatric oncologist, has won the 2026 Roux Prize — a $100,000 award for using hard evidence to save children's lives. In Ghana, childhood cancer survival lags far behind wealthier countries, partly because families travel up to nine hours to reach a specialist. Amoako's answer: bring the care to them. In 2019 she built a shared-care service at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital so children get parts of their treatment close to home — over 150 kids treated so far, with better follow-through. She also trains parents of survivors to spot early warning signs and is building one of Africa's largest cancer genomics databases so precision medicine stops skipping African children.
