Ghana's TVET awards put a welder and a lone construction apprentice on the national stage

At the Ghana TVET Excellence Awards, the applause was loudest for the young women mastering trades long treated as men's work. Ann Afua Appiah, a qualified welder, was honoured — she uses social media to pull other young women toward the welding torch. Runner-up Obimpeh Betty Richest was the only female student among her construction apprentices, and campaigns for more women on site. The best vocational school award went to Fr. Dogli Memorial Technical Institute in the Oti Region, recognised for innovative projects, industry links and standout exam results — practical education, celebrated like a cup final.

The upbeat factorsparks, scaffolding and centre stage — Ghana's skills future being welded by the people once told it wasn't for them.
