Girls who code, girls who build: Burundi puts its daughters' schooling at the centre

At the Rusi Polytechnical and Vocational Retraining Centre in Burundi, the visitors were not shown a report — the girls showed them robots. An African Union education mission, welcomed in Gitega with UN Women support, came to check on Burundi's commitments under the 'Educate Her' campaign, and found the African Girls Can Code Initiative in full swing: young women demonstrating applications they had built themselves. The mission, held under the Bujumbura Declaration, is feeding into a national roadmap for girls' and women's education, with a deliberate tilt toward science, technical training, coding and robotics — fields where girls are so often told, quietly or loudly, that they do not belong.

The upbeat factornot users of technology, but creators of it — that is the future Burundi is schooling for.
