Guyana's big solar bet takes the Caribbean's top clean-energy prize

Guyana's push to power itself with sunshine has just been named the best in the Caribbean. At the 2026 Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) Industry Awards in Panama, the Guyana Utility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme — GUYSOL, the country's programme for building large solar farms — won the Best Clean Energy Programme Award. Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar and GUYSOL programme coordinator Amir Dillawar were at the forum to receive the award. For a small country whose electricity has long leaned on imported fuel, it is outside recognition that the solar build-out is being done well — and a signal to neighbours across the Caribbean that utility-scale solar can carry a national grid.

The upbeat factorthe Caribbean's clean-energy judges looked at every programme in the region — and picked Guyana's solar farms.
