He stormed out of his house over a football loss — and found a woman who needed saving

Alastair Cass, 40, left his Devon home fuming after Arsenal lost 3-0 to Brighton. Then he heard a voice crying 'help' from the valley behind his house. A woman named Sallie had been stuck chest-deep in mud for four hours. He jumped on his quad bike with planks and rope and tried to free her; when the mud's suction held fast, he raced home to call emergency services. Fire crews, police, a boat rescue team and paramedics then worked two hours to pull her to safety. She later sent Cass a thank-you card: 'I have never been so happy to see another human being as I was you that day!'

The upbeat factorShe thanked him: 'Thanks to Arsenal for being rubbish at football!'
