Hidden order turns up inside the solar wind's chaos

A team led by Dr Masatomi Iizawa at TU Braunschweig and the University of Tokyo, using data from NASA's Parker Solar Probe, found that the tangled magnetic fields streaming from the sun flip their swirl direction at a precise scale — right where flowing behaviour gives way to particle behaviour. The discovery, in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, could sharpen forecasts of the geomagnetic storms that can disrupt power grids and satellites.

The upbeat factorinside apparent chaos, the sun's wind keeps a tidy hidden pattern.
