Humans follow the tune; finches hear the whole texture of a sound

Play people and zebra finches the same sequences of tones and they listen in genuinely different ways, Amsterdam and Leiden researchers report in Communications Biology. People lean on pitch — how high or low a note is — while finches weave pitch together with a sound's texture. Listeners with musical training were the most flexible of all, suggesting practice teaches our ears new ways to hear.

The upbeat factoreven hearing itself has more than one way to be right.
