'I can't believe how beautiful reading is': Peter learned to read and write at 42

For most of his life, Peter Lloyd, who is deaf, hid that he could not read or write, leaning on his wife whenever words were involved. At 42, in crisis during Covid, he asked the charity Read Easy for help — and over three years of twice-weekly sessions with a volunteer, the world opened up. He finished his first Harry Potter book, cooks from recipes his son chooses, and now speaks up as an ambassador so other men feel able to ask, too.

The upbeat factorit is never too late to open the book — or to ask for help opening it.
