In a rougher region, Uruguay stays the calm one

The 2026 Global Peace Index ranked Uruguay 43rd in the world, the safest country in Latin America, even as the region as a whole grew less peaceful. Political stability, strong institutions and low conflict earned it a peace score of 1.754, ahead of Chile, Costa Rica and Paraguay in the region. A small country proving calm is a choice.

The upbeat factorPeace is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of care.
