In Dublin, Europe's new Bio-based Alliance wants farm- and sea-grown materials to replace fossil ones

Plastic from petroleum, or plastic from plants and seaweed? In Dublin this week, European Commissioner Jessika Roswall launched the Bio-based Europe Alliance at the Global Bioeconomy Summit, with more than 100 organisations already signed up. The idea is practical: link the farmers and foresters who can grow sustainable raw materials with the buyers who need bio-based plastics, chemicals, textiles and building materials — and give both a clear enough demand signal to invest. 'Reducing our dependence on fossil-based materials will make Europe's economy more competitive, circular and resilient,' Roswall said. Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen added that it hands farmers 'new market opportunities and diversification of income.'
