In Kenya's Kisumu county, nine in ten eligible girls are now protected against cervical cancer

Kisumu County has lifted HPV vaccination coverage among eligible girls from 16% in 2022 to 90% by August 2026, a milestone county leaders credit to community engagement, schools, and health workers. HPV causes most cervical cancer, one of the most preventable cancers — so these vaccinations will save thousands of young lives in the decades ahead. Rwanda is often held up as the model with its school-based programme since 2011; Kisumu is now closing in.

The upbeat factorhope — a generation of girls who may never have to fear one of the most preventable cancers.
