Jenna and Rachael built a vet partnership for 400 rescued horses — and it just won national honours

Jenna Goldby and Rachael Blackler of The Mare and Foal Sanctuary spend their days looking out for more than 400 horses, ponies and donkeys cared for in foster homes through the charity's Sanctuary at Home scheme. Their External Veterinary Project — building closer working ties between local vets and welfare organisations, so decisions about each animal are faster and kinder — has just won the Advocacy and Policy Influence Award at the National Equine Welfare Council's Strategic Goal Recognition Awards 2026. They were honoured alongside Rae Andrews of World Horse Welfare, recognised for years of collaborative work across North Wales, and Anna Gregory of Nottingham Trent University, celebrated for almost 35 years of dedication to horse welfare.

The upbeat factorbehind every rescued horse is a web of people who refuse to look away — and this week, they got their moment.
