Lesotho is building its farmers an AI adviser

A farmer in Lesotho with a question about a failing crop usually has to wait — for an extension officer, for a radio programme, for a neighbour who might know. The government wants to shorten that wait to the length of a phone screen: an AI-powered chatbot, being developed by the science and agriculture ministries together, that will give farmers practical agricultural information and solutions. Announced by Minister Nthati Moorosi at the opening of National Science, Technology and Innovation Week 2026 in Maseru on October 20, the chatbot is still being built — but it points at a clear idea: research should leave the report and arrive in the field.

The upbeat factorexpert advice, carried in a pocket, for the farmers who have always had to wait longest for it.
