Lunch trays full of Kentucky: three school districts earn $24,000 for buying from local farms
Kentucky is marking National Farm to School Month by rewarding the school districts that put the most home-grown food on lunch trays. Bowling Green Independent Schools will receive $10,000, Harlan County Public Schools $8,000 and Mayfield Independent Schools $6,000 — and each district will spend its award on even more Kentucky-grown food in the 2026–27 school year. The districts earned the honours for buying the highest shares of local proteins and produce, with Kentucky beef, mini peppers, peaches, strawberries and lettuce among the favourites. The Farm to School Stars awards, run by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, are paid for by drivers who voluntarily chip in when they renew their farm licence plates; Kentuckians gave more than $941,630 that way this year.
