Maryland just set aside $21 million to keep 4,240 acres of farms and forests working
Maryland's Board of Public Works has approved $21 million for Rural Legacy grants across 19 areas of the state, buying conservation easements that keep more than 4,240 acres of working farms, forests and wildlife habitat from being developed — while the land stays in the hands of the people who farm and steward it. The board added a further $4.6 million for park upgrades and land conservation in nine counties. Easements are the quiet workhorse of conservation: no fences, no headlines, just land that stays land, generation after generation.
The upbeat factor4,240 acres that will still be feeding people and sheltering wildlife long after everyone who signed the papers is gone.
