Mexico taught a million kids to read better — in record time
Representatives from six Latin American and Caribbean countries met in Guanajuato and Mexico City last month for the 2026 Literacy Immersion Days, convened by Fundación Instituto Natura and UNESCO. The host's own results were the star: in Guanajuato, the share of third-graders reaching expected reading levels jumped from 67 to 88 percent, part of a national push now covering 11 Mexican states, more than 22,000 schools, 55,000 trained teachers, and over 1.3 million children.
The upbeat factor67 to 88 percent — proof that a reading crisis can be fixed, classroom by classroom.
