Money sent home, straight into a wallet: remittances get an easier last mile in Cameroon
When money is sent home to family in Cameroon, the last stretch — actually receiving it — has often been the hardest part: patchy options and methods that change from place to place. dLocal and Western Union have now extended their partnership so people in Cameroon can receive remittances directly into supported local digital wallets, with licensed mobile operators and local financial firms handling the payout on the ground. Nigeria is next, where the plan covers both direct bank transfers and mobile wallets. The sums at stake are not small change: families across Sub-Saharan Africa received about $57 billion in remittances in 2024 — money that pays school fees, rent and clinic bills. One connected path from sender to wallet will not fix everything, but it removes a daily friction for the people waiting at the receiving end.
