Nairobi opens a health innovation hub for young African problem-solvers

Start from a specific, felt need — that was Safaricom Foundation chair Joseph Ogutu's advice as the Amref Health Innovation Hub was inaugurated on 18 October at Amref International University's Northlands Campus in Nairobi. Ogutu pointed to M-PESA, which grew from simple money transfers into infrastructure, as the model. The hub, launched under the Africa Health Collaborative theme 'Africa Unlocked', will back youth-led health innovation and frontline health workers. Its 10,000-jobs figure is a five-year ambition, not a result — but the doors, and the challenge, are now open.

The upbeat factorthe next M-PESA for health may come from a young Nairobi innovator who now has a hub behind her.
