NASA's Roman telescope is nearly ready to open its enormous eyes
A telescope with a view at least 100 times wider than Hubble's is finishing its final checks. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launched on August 30, is travelling to its parking spot about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth and has entered its final commissioning phase — calibrating instruments and sharpening its focus before regular science begins. Some of its systems are already performing better than required, NASA says, which could open up discoveries nobody planned for when its first images arrive in early 2027.
The upbeat factora new eye on the universe, already exceeding its own specifications.
