Nearly one in four 'high-risk' breast cancer patients are safer than they feared — and an AI test just proved it blind

An AI test that reads a routine pathology slide has passed a tough, independent check. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, working blind — without knowing any patient's outcome — ran the myStage Dx test on 620 women from the PANTHER trial, all considered clinically high-risk. The test picked out a group making up 23.5% of the women whose outlook was far brighter: ten years on, an estimated 96.1% of them were alive and free of recurrence, compared with 76.6% of the rest. For those women, clearer risk information could mean calmer decisions about extra years of treatment, and the side effects that come with it.

The upbeat factorfor hundreds of women told they were high-risk, an honest second look says the future looks much better than the label.
