Nigeria has recruited 30,000 health workers — and its doctors just marked 50 years of training them
In Abuja on Monday, as the West African College of Physicians opened its 50th annual meeting, Nigeria's government put a number on its health-workforce push: more than 30,000 healthcare professionals recruited into federal health facilities in the past two and a half years. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Health Minister Professor Muhammad Pate, said medical-education quotas have been doubled and tens of thousands of frontline workers trained, alongside investment in primary care centres and expanded health insurance. The audience embodied the longer story: 1,376 participants gathered for the college's golden jubilee — fifty years since 1976 of training and certifying the specialist physicians who staff hospitals across West Africa. WACP President Dr Mamadou-Mourtalla Ka paid tribute to the generations of teachers and mentors who built it.
