Nigeria just opened its first robotic surgery academy — and training places will be fully funded

Nigerian surgeons will soon be able to learn robot-assisted surgery without leaving home. The RHV RoboMed Robotic Academy has opened in Redemption City, Ogun State, with two robotic surgical systems worth about $4 million — one for treating patients, one reserved for training — and a plan to produce 400 robotic surgery specialists within two years. Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa pledged that students will be fully funded through TETFund, with the academy folded into a new Centre of Excellence. 'The aim is for every part of this country to be able to conduct robotic surgery,' said RHV chief executive Dr Adedamola Dada, whose programme has already handled about 40 cases.
