Nigeria's tech girls win a Commonwealth-wide award for bringing the internet to everyone

Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN) has won the 2026 CTO Digital Excellence Award for Universal Access Service, honouring its work opening digital doors for girls across Nigeria. Since 2002 the group has coached girls who go on to build real things for their own communities — a waste-management solution in Onitsha, a smart-city model in Maiduguri, a solar-power truck to save farmers' harvests in Kano. The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation picked WITIN as its 125th-anniversary honours rolled out.

The upbeat factorpride — girls who learned to code are now the ones solving their communities' hardest problems.
