Nine months after wildfire took their clinic, a Chilean town just broke ground on its new one
When wildfires swept Chile's Biobío region in January, the Ríos de Chile health centre in the coastal town of Lirquén burned to the ground, leaving more than 3,000 residents without their local clinic. This week the town broke ground on its replacement: a new 320-square-metre (about 3,445-square-foot) family health centre with dental, obstetric and general consultation rooms, to be built on land provided through a land-use agreement by the local port operator. The project is led by the nonprofit Desafío Levantemos Chile with the Municipality of Penco and the Talcahuano Health Service. 'This first stone not only represents the beginning of a high-standard work, but the real commitment to restore dignity and tranquillity to thousands of families,' said the nonprofit's president, Nicolás Birrell.
