Ninety years old, and still writing new music

Steve Reich turns 90 tomorrow, October 3 — and at 89 he is still writing. His newest piece, "In All Your Ways," just got its world premiere from the Colin Currie Group at the Edinburgh International Festival. NPR marked the milestone with a retrospective tracing the arc: the 1965 tape-loop experiments with a preacher's voice in San Francisco, the African drumming and Balinese gamelan studies that reshaped Western rhythm, and a vocabulary that rippled into classical, jazz, electronic and pop. Celebrations include a birthday concert at Carnegie Hall on October 22.
