No more river trips: a solar borehole brings water to a Kenyan school

At Adega Mixed Senior School in Rachuonyo East, the day used to bend around the River Awach Kibuon — the walk for water, for the school and for the households around it. On 15 October a solar-powered borehole was switched on instead, complete with a 10,000-litre elevated tank and a community water kiosk, after test pumping confirmed it works. Government Delivery Unit director Silvance Osele described the launch; learners, among them Grade 9 student Melvin Awuor, talked about what comes back when the river trips end: safety, and time to study.

The upbeat factorclean water at the school gate gives children back the hours the river used to take.
