On Thursday, a million people will turn the lights on for after-school

The last bell is not the end of a child's day — for millions of families, what happens next matters just as much. On Thursday, October 22, the 27th annual Lights On Afterschool celebration will fill that gap with joy: around 8,000 events across the USA, from science fairs and student showcases to family fun nights, with about a million people expected to take part. Organised by the Afterschool Alliance, with singer Usher as honorary chair, the day makes a simple argument in the happiest possible way — programmes that keep children safe, curious and learning after school deserve to keep their doors open.

The upbeat factora million people, one evening, all showing up for the hours when kids need grown-ups most.
