One cleared traffic for a mother in labour, one dived into the sea in his boots
This week Alderman JP Smith honoured three City of Cape Town officers for going beyond the call. Metro Police Constable Moeneeb Coetzee cleared a path through city traffic for first-time mother Micaela Katz, in premature labour en route to Claremont hospital — doctors found the baby in distress, delivered him safely, and told the parents the quick response helped save their son. LEAP Officer Brent Williams, on patrol at Monwabisi Beach, stripped off his bulletproof vest and swam out in his service boots to bring a struggling boy safely to shore. A third officer, Senior Inspector Deirdre Thomas, stopped in Belhar to move an injured dog off the road.
The upbeat factorstrangers in uniform turned ordinary workdays into rescue days.
