One field, two harvests: broccoli grows happily under pink-tinted solar panels

At a farm in central Sweden, researchers from Sweden and Italy grew broccoli beneath see-through magenta solar panels tuned to pass along the blue and red light plants feed on most. The broccoli heads came in about as heavy, and just as nutritious, as broccoli grown in open sun — slower to ripen, but the land pulled double duty, growing food and making electricity at once. Counted together, the same ground delivered what would otherwise have taken about 18% more land farmed and paneled separately.
