One million kilowatt-hours from a stadium roof: London Stadium passes a solar milestone

The stadium that hosted the London 2012 Olympics now makes its own sunshine into electricity. Its roof carries 3,350 solar panels woven into a 6,500-square-metre membrane, and in its first 14 months the system has generated more than one million kilowatt-hours — roughly a year's power for over 350 households — while avoiding about 177 tonnes of carbon emissions. In June alone the panels covered about a fifth of the stadium's electricity use, through a £4.35 million (about $5.9 million) climate investment backed by the Mayor of London's Green Finance Fund.
