One million trees, planted with the people who live among them: Brazil's Atlantic Forest grows back
In Brazil's Ribeira and Paraíba valleys, local Guarani, quilombola and family-farming communities have planted 1,015,594 trees since 2023 — passing the one-million mark for the Arboredo Project, led by Forest Trends and the Arbor Day Foundation. The planting covers 1,089 hectares (about 2,700 acres), engaged 379 families and 40 community groups, supported four local nurseries and created 110 jobs, with more than 1.7 million Brazilian reais (about $320,000) flowing to local seed collectors, growers and workers.
The upbeat factora million trees, and the money and skills stayed with the families who planted them.
