One rings like a bell over the river: two new frogs found singing in Madagascar

In Ranomafana National Park, one of the most carefully studied rainforests on Earth, two small frogs have been hiding in plain hearing. They look almost identical to frogs scientists already knew, so night searches along fast streams and rocky caves — and close listening — finally gave them away. One, named lakolosy, the Malagasy word for bell, sings a loud, ringing call that carries over rushing water. The other, lavabato, named for a rock hole, makes quiet clicks from inside cave-like rocks, sometimes even in daylight. DNA confirmed both are entirely new species. Each is known from just one forest spot, so giving them names is the first step to protecting them.

The upbeat factoreven in a rainforest scientists have studied for decades, life still has new songs to sing.
