Opal Lee turns 100 — and vows to keep on walking

In Fort Worth, Texas, friends, neighbours and local leaders gathered at the future site of the National Juneteenth Museum to sing Stevie Wonder's 'Happy Birthday' to Opal Lee on her 100th birthday. The former teacher started walking for a federal Juneteenth holiday at 89 — 2.5-mile walks from Texas to Washington — gathered more than 1.5 million petition signatures, and stood beside the president when it became law in 2021. The museum has raised $55 million of its $70 million goal. 'I'm going to keep on walking,' she said, 'and keep on talking until everybody understands that this is our contribution.'

The upbeat factorgratitude for a century of stubborn optimism.
