Peru's astronomy teachers win Europe's top outreach prize
CosmoAmautas, a Peruvian non-profit that turns astronomy into a doorway to science for rural schools, won the 2026 Europlanet Prize for Public Engagement, worth €1,000 (about $1,170). Since 2021 its team has trained more than 200 teachers across 21 of Peru's 24 regions, backed over 80 school Astroclubs and reached more than 10,000 students — weaving Andean sky traditions into lessons with real space-mission data.
The upbeat factorone trained teacher can light up a whole village's curiosity — Peru now has hundreds.
