Pirate ships, windmills and one very fast teacher: Billericay's soapbox derby tops £250,000 (about $340,000) for charity

Thousands of people packed London Road in the Essex town of Billericay to watch about 25 homemade carts race downhill, swerving hay bales and catching air over jumps. The carts ranged from pirate ships to windmills, and every entry raised money for charity — with the Billericay Rotary Club telling the BBC the derby has now raised more than £250,000 (about $340,000) over the years. Local teacher Gillian Welch piloted a cart for Brightside Primary School and called it "a brilliant event."

The upbeat factorsilliness with a purpose — joy that gives back.
