Play now, glide later: an active childhood may make moving through life easier

Penn State scientists fitted young guinea fowl — birds that walk on two legs, much like people — with small weights on one leg while they grew up. As adults, the birds that had trained young carried extra weight without burning any extra energy at all, while birds facing the load for the first time burned 23% more. It is the first direct evidence that moving a lot while growing can tune a body to get around more cheaply for the rest of its life.

The upbeat factorevery childhood game of tag may be a quiet investment in an easier, more active adulthood.
