Rooftop solar homes in Bangladesh are set to earn a 'green home' badge — and tax breaks

A home in Dhaka with solar panels on its roof may soon carry an official title: 'green home'. Bangladesh's Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, told a roundtable in the capital on October 31 that households installing rooftop solar will be recognised as green homes and offered special tax incentives, with a bill to make installation easy headed to parliament soon. The government has set a target of adding 5,000 megawatts of renewable electricity — mainly solar — within the next six months, as it works to cut dependence on imported fuels. The plan's promise is simple: let ordinary households generate power where they live, and reward them for it.
