Safe water for the dry Barind: a Tk1,203.73 crore (about $97 million) plan for wells, latrines and rainwater across 123 subdistricts

In Bangladesh's Barind region — one of the country's driest, where groundwater is falling — the government has drawn up a Tk1,203.73 crore (about $97 million) project to bring safe water and sanitation to 123 upazilas (subdistricts) across 16 districts. The plan, set to run from October 2026 to March 2030, includes nearly 60,000 improved twin-pit latrines for low-income households, more than 4,300 community water supply units, tens of thousands of shallow and deep tubewells, 125 public toilets and 1,797 rainwater harvesting systems, plus re-excavated ponds with sand filters. It goes before the national Executive Committee for approval this weekend.
