Seven African nations are lining up more than 1.5 gigawatts of new solar, with India holding the clipboard
The International Solar Alliance and India's state power giant NTPC are preparing agreements with seven African countries to develop more than 1.5 gigawatts of solar power. The biggest pieces are an 800-megawatt project in Guinea and 400 megawatts in Ethiopia, with 100 megawatts each for Malawi and Zambia, 50 each for Mali and Niger, and an inventive 30-megawatt floating solar plant in Mauritius. NTPC will act as project management consultant — running feasibility studies and designing the bidding that picks the builders — with talks in Ethiopia and Guinea already advanced.
The upbeat factorsunshine is the one resource all seven countries have in abundance — now they have a shared plan, and an engineer, to turn it into electricity.
