She spent over an hour in ice water — and says the cold taught her calm

Maria Bodaj of Poland, who calls herself the 'Icebreaker,' has a new Guinness World Records title: longest time submerged in ice water by a woman, at 1 hour and 38 seconds. She planned to last exactly an hour, lost track of time while focused on her breathing, and emerged to learn she'd overshot by 38 seconds. Bodaj says the secret isn't brute toughness but training the mind: redirecting attention to something repetitive, staying present, approaching cold with curiosity instead of fear. 'When the mind becomes more open, some of the boundaries we thought were fixed start to move,' she said. She wants her records to nudge others — especially women — toward small, conscious experiences with discomfort: 'If this can help someone else, that is much more meaningful to me than any record.'

The upbeat factorJoy: the body can go further than the mind fears — if you stay calm.
