Six researchers, one shared mission: $1.13 million to outsmart lung cancer

Behind every lung-cancer breakthrough is a researcher who kept going — and this week six of them got the funding to do exactly that. LUNGevity Foundation, the largest nonprofit funder of lung cancer research in the USA, has given six awards worth $1.13 million in total. Three early-career scientists at Columbia University, the University of California, Davis, and Ohio State University receive $300,000 each to tackle a hard problem: why the body's immune system sometimes stops fighting the cancer, and how a simple blood test might show in advance which patients a treatment will help. The other awards back work on screening and care for veterans, and a new way of growing a patient's own immune cells to fight their tumour.
