Slow down to care: a Waltham care home wins an award for unhurried dementia care

The Grove Care Home in Waltham, near Grimsby, has learned that the best dementia care runs at walking pace. Its team adopted Namaste Care — a gentle, person-led approach built on meaningful touch, calm surroundings, sensory stimulation and unhurried one-to-one time — and residents have grown more comfortable, relaxed and less anxious, while staff say their own work feels more fulfilling. The home's Namaste Team has now received this year's Hennell Award from the University of Worcester's Association for Dementia Studies, which honours teams that turn dementia-care learning into daily practice. The award is named after Brian Hennell, who lived with dementia — a reminder that the measure of care is the person receiving it.

The upbeat factorcare measured in unhurried minutes, not tasks completed — and an award for slowing down.
