Solar cold rooms just landed in a Lagos market — so a harvest lasts 21 days, not 2

A tomato seller in Lagos has always raced the sun: produce that cannot be sold in two days is sold at a loss, or lost entirely. At the ABAT market in Ibeju-Lekki, that race just changed. ColdHubs — walk-in cold rooms powered entirely by solar panels and batteries, rented pay-as-you-go — have been installed with support from Heifer International, stretching shelf life from 2 days to 21. Founder Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu's company plans 40 hubs this year. 'With ColdHubs, farmers will now have better returns,' said Lagos agriculture commissioner Adesola Olusanya's representative at the launch. Heifer Nigeria aims to help more than 1 million families, mostly women and young people, reach a sustainable living income by 2030.

The upbeat factora harvest that keeps for three weeks instead of two days changes what a farmer can earn.
