Solar panels now pump clean water for Amazon river villages
In Brazil's Amazon, the river community of Nova Sociedade — where families once walked up to 20 kilometres (about 12 miles) for water in the 2024 drought — now fills its storage tanks with solar-powered pumps installed in June. The non-profit Saúde e Alegria has equipped 30 communities this way, and each Nova Sociedade household also received its own solar kit for lights and phone charging, replacing costly diesel generators.
The upbeat factorsunshine, not diesel, now brings clean water to 36 families at the river's edge.
