Somalia takes the wheel: the UN's political mission closes after decades of support

The UN's Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia has wrapped up its work, handing full responsibility for the country's recovery to Somali institutions. UN officials marked the closure as a milestone earned through progress in state formation, political inclusion and constitutional reform since the early 1990s. Support continues through some 25 UN agencies — including a rebuilt market in Balcad with 56 sturdy stalls, running water and solar lighting, about 70 percent of them run by women-headed households, and a school meals programme in Puntland linking 1,330 local farmers and fisherfolk to meals for 18,700 children.

The upbeat factorthe handover itself is the headline — a country steering its own recovery, with partners now riding alongside.
