South Korea and Japan just joined the world's top tier of AI-ready economies — by executing, not announcing

Ambition, it turns out, is cheap; execution is the rare thing. Boston Consulting Group's AI Maturity Matrix 2026, covering more than 75 economies, has moved South Korea and Japan into the top 'AI Pioneer' tier alongside Canada, Singapore, the UK and the US. South Korea earned its place with home-grown AI models — ranked in the world's top five in Stanford's 2026 AI Index — and large-scale public investment in computing power and skills. Eight economies climbed a tier since 2024, including Nigeria, Chile and Greece. 'The economies that advanced show that state action is what turns AI ambition into readiness,' says BCG's Joerg Hildebrandt.
