South Korea wagers 1,000 trillion won (about $746 billion) on a green economy
President Lee Jae Myung has unveiled a decade-long green transformation strategy backed by 1,000 trillion won (about $746 billion) in public funding through 2035, with another 220 trillion won expected from private companies. The plan targets cleaner steel, advanced batteries and low-carbon power, 100 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, and electric or hydrogen vehicles making up more than 70% of new car sales by 2035 — with the first green treasury bonds planned for 2028. Lawmakers have also agreed on cutting greenhouse gas emissions 69–80% by 2040 on the road to net-zero by 2050.
