Sri Lanka's hunger score has more than halved since 2000
The 2026 Global Hunger Index gives Sri Lanka a score of 10.2 — down from 22.1 in 2000 — placing the country 53rd of 122 assessed, with undernourishment at 4.9% of the population and under-five mortality at 0.6%. The index, built from undernourishment, child stunting, wasting and child mortality, still classes Sri Lanka's hunger as moderate, and challenges plainly remain. But a generation-long, steady halving of hunger is the kind of slow good news that never makes a headline — and changes millions of childhoods.
The upbeat factor22.1 to 10.2 in one generation — hunger quietly cut in half.
